The “Sanskar Vidhi,” written by Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati, is an authoritative text on the 16 major sacraments of life, based on the Vedas, which outline the process of purifying the body and soul from birth (conception) to death (funeral). These sacraments are the golden rules for the holistic development (physical, mental, and spiritual) of a person for the attainment of Dharma, Artha, Kama, and Moksha.
The main steps of the 16 sacraments (Shodasha Sanskara):
- Pre-birth: Conception, Punsavan, Seemantonnayan.
- Childhood: Jaatkarma, Namkaran, Nishkraman, Annaprashan, Chudakarma, Karnavedha.
- Education and youth: Vidyarambh, Vedarambh, Keshant, Samavartan, marriage.
- Final stage: Vanaprastha, Sannyasa, Antyesh.
Main rite details:
- Marriage Ceremony: It is a sacred bond where husband and wife take a vow of respect and support towards each other.
- Antyeshti (funeral rites): The final rites performed to consign the body to the flames and attain salvation, including the rituals of collecting and disposing of the ashes.
- Shikha/Choti: Symbolizes maintaining high ideals and culture in life.
According to the Sanskar Vidhi, these rituals make a person’s life disciplined, pure and purposeful.
